Description
In June 1953, a Jewish communist couple, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, were executed for allegedly selling atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. Since that time numerous commentators have debated their guilt or innocence. The current consensus based on the Venona transcripts seems to be that Julius Rosenberg was guilty of some form of minor espionage, but that his wife was probably not a Soviet agent. (1) However, comparatively little attention has been drawn to the Jewishness of the Rosenbergs, and its impact on their ultimate fate. For example, two major pro-Rosenberg texts make only passing references to the Jewish element of the Rosenberg trial, (2) whilst the two books by the Rosenberg children also relegate the family's Jewish background to the margins. (3) The principal anti-Rosenberg text discusses the Jewish aspects in greater detail, but largely dismisses their significance. (4)
